ILOILO City – Fire struck Barangay Rizal, Lapuz district yesterday morning, gutting eight houses and a pharmacy.
The 76-year-old Purita Peruno told Panay News the fire started in her house. It came from a candle she was using, she said.
The Bureau of Fire Protection (BFP) declared a fire out around 12:50 p.m., over two hours after the blaze started around 10:21 a.m.
Aside from Peruno’s house, those of her neighbors Joseph Alona, Wilfredo Gonzales and Noel Villanueva, Ava Kris Pharmacy and the boarding house of Alona were also totally burned.
On the other hand, the houses of Edel Sanchez, Francis Fernandez and Randy Egca were partially damaged.
“Nagsindi ako kandila pero ginpatay ko man. I just do not know ngaa may kalayo pa,” said Peruno.
Fire Senior Superintendent Jerry Candido said the fire started at the second floor of Peruno’s house.
“The ground floor was made of concrete but the upper floor was made of light materials,” said Candido.
BFP estimated the damage to have reached P1.5 million
All fire stations in the city helped put out the fire.
Peruno said she fetched a pail of water to supposedly stop the fire from spreading in her house but she fell from the stairs.
The fire spread quickly, said Peruno, and all she could do was run out of her house./PN
