MANILA – Philippine teams comprising Negrense players dominated the Seniors and Little League divisions of the 2017 Asia-Pacific Softball Regional Tournament held over the weekend at the Singapore American School in Woodlands, Singapore.
Their victories earned them qualifications to the Senior League Softball World Series at the Lower Sussex Little League Park in Roxana, Delaware, and the Little League Softball World Series in Portland, Oregon.
Domingo Lacson National High School players beat India, 10-0, in the fifth inning in the championship game of the 13-14 Division.
Before that, the Seniors squad — mentored by Liezl Joy Garay, Aileen Cabaybay and Romeo Camporaso — managed wins over Indonesia (29-0), Singapore (17-0), India (11-0), and Guam (23-4).
The team comprised Kaith Jalandoni, Mary Joys and Joesiemers Maguad, Neo May Mahinay, Glecilyn Alipato, April Gonzales, Chastine Jover, Ma. Victoria Magbanua, Glory Alonzo, Angela Solidarios, April Minanga, and Mea Tunogbanua.
Meanwhile the Philippine 11-12 team, represented by Education Training Center School III players, captured the Little League championship after defeating Singapore, 15-0.
Earlier the team of head coaches Rolando Fuentes and Edmund Palmamento scored 14-1 over the Singaporeans and demolished Indonesia in their two encounters in the opener, 33-0 and 10-0.
Mary Alpitche, Ayeza Arreglado, Joecel Cabato, Angelica Cordero, Neavia Marie Emborniza, Shery Hud, Kyle Matarong, Anne Frensbelle Patricio, Rhea May Quilongquilong, Kenchie Tan, and Rodalyn Villanueva composed the Little League team.
“We are very happy of the victory. We can’t explain our feelings when our country was called and the national anthem was played,” said Romeo Sison, sports coordinator for the Department of Education – Division of Negros Occidental. “It’s different when you compete in the international level.”
“[This] won’t be possible without the full support of Gov. Alfredo Marañon Jr. (Negros Occidental) and our provincial sports coordinator, Nonong Verdeflor, who spearheaded the creation of the Negros Occidental Softball Association,” he added./PN
