BACOLOD City – The councilors are requesting the City Health Office to conduct monthly health assessment on the inmates of the Bureau of Jail Management and Penology (BJMP) in Barangays Taculing and Handumanan in this city.
The officials, through a resolution, also want the Health Office to strictly screen and monitor the preparation of the inmates’ food and sources of drinking water.
Councilor Ricardo Tan, chairman of the committee on police, security and jail management and penology, said the city council has come up with a resolution because of the congestion in the detention facilities.
“We need to ensure that the health of our detention prisoners is properly protected to avoid food poisoning and diarrhea,” said Tan.
He added that preventive management in the preparation of their food and periodic inspection of the source of their drinking water are necessary.
The councilor further said there is also a need to inspect and observe the sanitary practices of the inmates to ensure their health and safety.
Recently, two inmates at the New Bilibid Prison died due to diarrhea outbreak and food poisoning.
The incident should serve as a lesson that a slight neglect of cleanliness, sanitation and good practices inside the already congested detention cells will be fatal to the inmates’ health, Tan said./PN
