ILOILO City – An allegedly drunken man died in the fire that struck his shanty in Barangay Poblacion, Molo district.
Fire investigators believe the 35-year-old Noel Lejano tried to escape but failed and got suffocated. He was burned “beyond recognition,” City Fire Marshal Jerry Candido told Panay News.
An unattended candle caused the blaze that started at the door of the shanty. The fire spread fast, Candido said, citing investigation.
The Bureau of Fire Protection received a fire call around 1:25 a.m. Firefighters put the blaze under control around 1:40 a.m. and declared a “fire out” around 2:30 a.m.
That Lejano was drunk made the situation worse for the victim, Candido said.
He appealed to the public not to forget to put out candles after use.
Fire investigators pegged the cost of damage at P30,000.
On Monday in Barangay Rizal, Lapuz, fire struck eight houses and a pharmacy. An unattended candle also caused it, investigators showed./PN
