MANILA – Twelve suspected members and supporters of the Maute terrorist group, who were arrested in a hospital in Pagadian City recently, were slapped with rebellion charges on Wednesday.
In a case filed before Misamis Oriental Regional Trial Court, the 12 suspects were indicted after undergoing inquest proceedings. Another suspect died while being transported.
Among those charged were Racma Macatuon Talib, Lambo Ampaso Ameril, Huwarda Macatuon Talib, Cosnia M. Talib, Sanabae Saliling Macatuon, Amerodin Capga Ameril, Yusoph Taha Halil, Dima Ampaso Ali, Sacapan Mustapha Talib, Halil Saliling Ali, Mansawi Imam Gumobat, and Alanoden Macatuon Dimarugong.
They allegedly conspired with other Maute group members “now actively engaged in an armed rebellion against the government,” the prosecutors said.
“The accused willfully, feloniously help, support, finance, promote, maintain, cause, direct, and rise publicly and take arms to establish an Islamic State province in Mindanao,” the charge sheet stated.
The Maute group is a radical Islamist group composed of former Moro Islamic Liberation Front guerrillas and some foreign fighters.
After pledging allegiance to the Islamic State, the Maute attacked government troops in Marawi City, capital of Lanao del Sur, on May 23.
