MANILA – Iloilo City-born Kiefer Ravena is leading the Gilas Pilipinas team that will compete in the 29th Southeast Asian (SEA) Games in August in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.
Ravena will not only lead Gilas to its 18th SEA Games title but also set his eyes on becoming the winningest Filipino cager in the tournament with four gold medals.
“This is something we really look forward to every two years, iyong SEA Games, to be — hopefully — the best in terms of basketball in Southeast Asia,” Ravena said. “I don’t mind the records. I just want to lead my team to a gold-medal finish.”
Gilas head coach Vincent “Chot” Reyes also tapped Filipino-German Christian Stadhardinger, Bobby Ray Parks Jr., Kobe Paras, Raymar Jose, and Almond Vosotros.
Rounding out the roster are Baser Amer, Chris Michael Tolomia, Von Pessumal, Kevin Ferrer, Carl Bryan Cruz, and Troy Rosario.
From the current lineup, only Ravena, Rosario, Ferrer, Vosotros, and Amer came from the Gilas squad in the SEA Games two years ago.
Reyes also optedfor an all-Filipino lineup, unlike in the previous edition when they had former naturalized center Marcus Douthit. He initially wanted to include naturalized center Andray Blatche but the latter is unavailable during competition time.
Gilas will be up against teams from Thailand, Brunei, Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, Singapore, Timor Leste, and Vietnam./PN
