DAVAO City – President Rodrigo Duterte already acknowledged the Islamic State to be a “looming problem” way before the IS-linked Maute group seized Marawi City, Presidential Spokesperson Ernesto Abella said.

Abella pointed this out during a press briefing in reaction to criticisms that the administration overlooked terrorism problems in the Philippines due to its focus on illegal drugs.

“Let me remind you that, as early as August last year … the President already told the Philippine military to be ready with ISIS and warned that the country would be plagued with the ISIS disease,” he said, using another acronym for the terrorist organization.

“Busy na unta ta pag-atubang ni aning problemaha na-a pa gyud droga, and I see a looming problem. Tan-aw nako within three to seven years from now magka-problema ta sa ISIS,” Abella said, quoting Duterte’s speech last Aug. 10 before Philippine Army’s 1st Infantry (Tabak) Division in Zamboanga del Sur.

(We’re already busy with the problem on drugs, and I see a looming problem. I think within three to seven years from now we will have a problem with ISIS.)

At the time, Duterte claimed Arab IS members entered Mindanao as missionaries whose real purpose was to indoctrinate into Moros the convoluted ideals of the international extremist group.

Anaay problema diri sa Muslim insurgency and we must arrest them before dili sila, ang atong mga kaigsuonang Moro, dili ma-contaminate sa ISIS disease.”

[That’s troublesome because communists’ political officers come in to a place whenever there is a good opportunity. That’s dangerous because they are messing with the mind. There’s a problem here on Muslim insurgency, and we must arrest them before our Moro brothers get contaminated with the ISIS disease.]

Abella also said Duterte already started receiving intel about the IS’ plans to take over Muslim communities in Mindanao as early as last year. (PNA)
