ILOILO City – To make this city disaster-resilient, all 180 barangay councils were told to craft their respective disaster risk reduction management plans.

The plans will serve as roadmaps to, among others, increase the resilience of vulnerable sectors, promote inclusive growth and optimize disaster mitigation opportunities, said Councilor Lady Julie Grace Baronda.

It was Baronda who recently introduced a resolution in the city council calling all barangays to formulate such plans in line with the city government’s Kahublagan sa Barangay para sa Lapnagon nga Kahandaan sa Kalamidad (KABALAKA, or Advocacy Program or Movement for Community-Based Disaster Preparedness).

“Every village should know what they are going to do during disasters. Their plan should be inclusive of vulnerable sectors such as persons with disabilities and senior citizens,” said Baronda.

Other vulnerable sectors she cited were pregnant women, children and indigenous people.

The City Disaster Risk Reduction Management Council initiated KABALAKA to carry out activities and projects such as disaster preparedness camp, exhibits and information centers or galleries, and create volunteer programs, among others. (Iloilo City PIO/PN)
