BACOLOD City – The office of Negros Occidental Third District representative Alfredo Abelardo Benitez held a launching and memorandum of understanding (MOU) signing for the burial assistance program.

The MOU was signed by Benitez, municipal mayors Andrew Montelibano (Murcia) and Marvin Malacon (EB Magalona), and city mayors Niel Lizares (Talisay), Francis Frederick Palanca (Victorias) and Mark Golez (Silay) yesterday at the Natures Village Resort, Talisay City.

The budget for the burial assistance will come from the national budget of the Department of Social Welfare and Development, said Benitez.

The beneficiary of the deceased can only receive burial assistance once. In cases where there is more than one claimant for a beneficiary, the claimant who is the nearest kin will receive the burial assistance.

An amount of P10,000 is allocated as burial assistance for a qualified beneficiary who is not a member of the Social Security System (SSS), Government Service Insurance System (GSIS) or any private insurance. Meanwhile, P5,000 will be given for the deceased – including individuals who are below 18 years old and newborns – who is a member of the SSS, GSIS or any private insurance.

Benitez clarified that the program will not extend cash amount to the claimant. He explained that they had tapped several funeral services to accommodate the beneficiary.

The claimant will just go to their local government unit, ask for a guaranty letter, and submit it to the funeral services company prior to the processing of the requirements after the death of the family member./PN
