ILOILO City – Floodwater washed away a shanty at a riverbank where a farmer and his two sons were staying in Barangay Layogbato, Lemery, Iloilo.

The 42-year-old farmer, Ricky Ortega, drowned. His body was found floating in the river in Barangay Alcantara, Lemery. His 14-year-old son Jerry drowned, too, and found in the same village.

The other son, 11-year-old EJ, survived, according to Senior Inspector Elmer Villaruel, municipal police chief.

Flood rushed in their shanty in the evening of June 30 while they were sleeping, Villaruel said.

EJ was able to hold on to a vine and seek help from the locals. Their shanty was destroyed.

An Alcantara villager, Johnny Marcella, found Ricky’s body around 6:30 a.m. the following day, a police report showed.

Jerry’s body, on the other hand, was found by fishermen around 6 p.m. of the same day.

The Ortegas were natives of Barangay Manayupit, Maayon, Capiz, but were staying in Layogbato to watch over a farm, it was learned./PN
