MANILA – The Games and Amusements Board (GAB) asked the World Boxing Organization (WBO) on Monday to review the controversial match between Manny Pacquiao and Jeff Horn on Sunday in Australia.
GAB chairman Abraham Mitra requested WBO President Francisco Valcarcel in an email to thoroughly review the “Battle of Brisbane” that saw Horn stripping the Filipino ring icon of the welterweight belt.
While Pacquiao respects the verdict — 115-113, 115-113, 117-111 in favor of the undefeated Australian — there may be lapses on the part of referee Mark Nelson and judges Waleska Roldan, Chris Flores and Ramón Cerdán, Mitra said.
“We would like to echo the stand of many boxing followers on the possible errors of the referee and judges who officiated the subject match,” Mitra wrote.
A GAB official told Panay News they hope the WBO will consider declaring the match a “no contest” or order an immediate rematch.
“We are eagerly waiting for their response,” said the GAB official, who spoke on condition of anonymity. “But we should not expect them to reverse the result. The only possibilities are an NC or an immediate rematch.”
While the possibility of the outcome getting reversed is close to impossible, match officials should be sanctioned for errors, if there are any, said Mitra.
“We are constrained to request for a thorough review by the WBO to identify possible miscalls by the referee, where some deductions were not made, and of the judges in their judging,” he said.
“We make the call for a review, which may call for sanctions on the referee and the judges if so warranted … in furtherance of our mutual goal of protecting the integrity of the sport and even more improving the industry to boxing that we love,” he added./PN
