MANILA – Creamline Cool Smashers got a much-needed boost ahead of its 2017 Premier V-League Open Conference semifinals clash with Bali Pure Water Defenders this weekend with star Alyssa Valdez given the green light to play.
Larong Volleyball ng Pilipinas, Inc. (LVPI) acting president Peter Cayco said Valdez has been allowed by the national women’s volleyball team to play in Games 1 and 2 of the semifinals series scheduled today and tomorrow.
The request for Valdez to play in V-League was granted following a letter from Cool Smashers’ mother team Rebisco, which backed the Southeast Asian Games-bound national team.
“At this point, we believe we have left no room for doubt on our commitment and support for the national team,” Rebisco wrote to LVPI. “We do not think that three games dates are too much to ask for the services of our player.”
Cayco, however, said even if Valdez is playing for the Cool Smashers, she still has to attend the national women’s volleyball team practices and has to sleep at their billeting hotel in Pasay City.
Also, the three-time UAAP MVP awardee must play for the Francis Vicente-mentored national team when they compete in the Asian Seniors Volleyball tournament to be held in Muntinlupa City next week.
“She still has to train and join the team in its hotel,” Cayco said in a statement. “Si coach Francis na ang bahalang mag-manage ng schedule niya. They have to discuss about it.”
Valdez, who already missed three games for Cool Smashers due to her national team duty, remained hopeful that she would be allowed by national team mentor Francis Vicente to suit up.
Valdez is the only national women’s volleyball team member whose team has reached all the way to the PVL semifinals after finishing the eliminations round with an unbeaten record./PN
