LATELY I have noticed that we are hearing more from politicians. The old image of an overweight and lazy crocodile in a barong can now be changed to an overweight and lazy howler monkey in a tuxedo.
Yes, you hear more from them and you actually see them doing work, but the biggest thing occupying politiciansâ minds right now are the accusations they have against each other.
It happened as early as the results of the May 2016 elections came out. As expected, not all were happy with what the polls showed. It began when former senator Bongbong Marcos filed an electoral protest against Vice President Leni Robredo since he believed that with his huge lead during the first half of the vote counting, it was impossible for Leni to overcome those. Well, it was big news for a time, but after so many dismissed cases we barely hear anything from the two opposing parties anymore.
Another protest not given as much limelight is the one filed by former Metro Manila Development Authority (MMDA) chairman Francis Tolentino against Sen. Leila de Lima. He claims that the senator manipulated the electronic transmission of the vote results thus resulting in him being the 13th placer.
The latest headline is the one between Commission on Elections (Comelec) chairman Andy Bautista and his estranged wife Patricia Paz. She filed a complaint against him claiming that he has P1-billion unexplained wealth not reflected in his Statement of Assets Liabilities and Net Worth.
The chairman countered the accusations claiming that Patricia is motivated by greed and is just doing so (with the help of her lover) to destroy the chairmanâs name and credibility. They even turned President Duterte from an iron-fisted, drug-hating commander-in-chief into a soft-hearted marriage councilor.
One thing we need to take into account with these accusations is the drive behind them. Could it really be that these public figures were suddenly enlightened to expose evil in society? Could they be driven by the strict âanti-corruptionâ policy of the Duterte administration? Or is it really just pure personal angst and bias?
Could they just be sore losers and broken hearts impassioned by bitterness or do these allegations really hold true?
When you have easy access to a fickle judiciary system, personal angst could be the end of anotherâs reputation. (angelica.panaynews@gmail.com/PN)
