MANILA – Whoever was behind the slaughter of dogs discovered in a pickup truck in Cavite must be punished, according to Sen. Leila de Lima.
Seventy-two slain dogs were found in a pickup that figured in a crash in Cavite last Thursday. The driver reportedly fled before the police arrived.
De Lima suspected that the discovery was up for meat trade, which she described as “very alarming.” She asked the authorities to catch those behind it.
Animal cruelty and neglect should face legal action, de Lima said on Tuesday.
Under Section 9 of Republic Act (RA) 8485, as amended by RA 10631, or the Animal Welfare Act of 1998, any person who subjects any animal to cruelty, maltreatment or neglect shall, upon conviction by final judgment, be punished by imprisonment and/or fine.
Hurting animals is as bad as hurting people, de Lima said.
“What makes pets different from us is they are helpless and voiceless,” said the detained senator. “They cannot fight back against any form of maltreatment and abuse.”/PN
