ILOILO City – To highlight the importance of science and technology, the Department of Science and Technology (DOST) Region 6 is holding the 2017 Regional Science and Technology Week (RSTW). It kicked off yesterday at SM City Iloilo.

According to DOST regional director Rowen Gelonga, several activities have been lined up.

“Among these are exhibits featuring new technology on disaster resilience, support to industry and micro, small and medium enterprises (MSMEs), agriculture, and fisheries,” said Gelonga.

DOST-assisted products under the Small Enterprise Technology Upgrading Program (SETUP) will also be featured in the Tek-Tienda MSME Product Fair.

With the theme, “Science for the People”, RSTW serves as a venue where people can experience how science and technology work and affect lives.

The celebration also reflects the commitment of the scientific community in pursuing collective expertise and innovations, said Gelonga.

Among the objectives of RSTW is to showcase science and technology trends, developments and breakthroughs as well as the accomplishments of DOST.

It also aims to increase public awareness about SETUP assistance, technical services and programs available and implemented in the region; encourage and assist MSMEs to adopt technological innovations to improve their products, services, operations, and increase their productivity and competitiveness, among others.

As part of the Regional Science and Technology Week, student researchers, designers and inventors will gather for the 2017 Regional Invention Contest and Exhibits.

A total of 28 finalists have been chosen from 96 entries./PN
