BACOLOD City — Eliminations for the 5th Negros First Gov. Alfredo G. Marañon Jr. Cup open boxing tournament in the 2nd and 1st districts will be on Sept. 6 to 7 and Sept. 9 to 11, respectively.
Cadiz City will host the 2nd District eliminations at the Don Bernardo Benedicto Community Center, while San Carlos will host the 1st District’s.
The 2nd District is composed of Cadiz City, Sagay City and Manapla, while the 1st District by San Carlos City, Escalante City, Toboso, Calatrava, and Salvador Benedicto.
Last year 1st District was the overall champion during the Marañon Cup in La Carlota City, while Cadiz placed second runner-up.
Candoni hosted the 6th District eliminations on Aug. 9 to 10.
Elimination winners will represent their districts in the finals on Oct. 8 to 12 at the Bacolod Arts and Youth Sports Center as part of the MassKara Festival.
Eight-division world champion and Filipino boxing icon Manny Pacquiao is expected to be the guest of honor.
To supervise the tournament is Angel “Nonong” Verdeflor, provincial sports coordinator and president of the Association of Boxing Alliances of the Philippines, Inc. – Western Visayas.
Hundreds of boxers will vie for the title in various weight categories in the tournament being organized by the Office of the Governor./PN
