AS PART of its program encouraging Ilonggos to engage in sports, Iloilo City will host a jiu-jitsu tournament for children and white belts from 8 a.m. to 10 p.m. on Sept. 10 at SM City Cyberzone in Mandurriao district.
The tournament has five categories: kindergarten/youth (ages 6 to 9 years old), pre-teen/junior teen (ages 10 to 12 years old), teen (ages 13 to 16 years old), men, and women.
Following are the weight classes per category:
- kindergarten/youth – 24kg, 31kg, 38 kg

pre-teen/junior teen – 29kg, 38.6kg, 47.6kg

teen – 51.3kg, 67.5kg, 73kg
-
men – 58kg, 64kg, 70kg, 76kg, 82kg, open
-
women – 54.5kg, 61kg, 68kg, open
The top three finishers per category will be recognized.
Facilitated by the city government’s Sports Development Division, the tournament is in partnership with SM City Iloilo and Iloilo Combat Sports.
“We are encouraging our Ilonggo jiu-jitsu fighters to participate in this one-day event,” Sports Division head Rommel Castro said. “This is part of Mayor Jed (Mabilog)’s campaign to ‘be in sports, not in drugs.’”
Iloilo Combat Sports manager Jose Ma. Vargas III and technical head Bodie Galutera are organizing the event.
