MANILA – National University Bulldogs survived numerous runs by University of the East Red Warriors to score 86-69 at the start of the UAAP Season 80 men’s basketball on Saturday at the SM Mall of Asia Arena in Pasay City.
Dave Wilson Yu led the way with career-high 14 points – 10 coming in the second half – for Bulldogs, which kicked off its campaign with a victory under new head coach Michael Jay Jarin.
Reggie Morido added 12 markers while Rodolfo Alejandro and Cameroonian import Issa Gaye contributed 11 markers apiece for Bulldogs, which is hoping to improve on its Final Four finish last year.
Bulldogs jumped to an early 16-5 advantage in the game on inside hits by Gaye and Matthew Aquino but Red Warriors responded with its own rally to come to within 20-13 at the end of the period.
Red Warriors tied the match at 20-all early in the second frame but consecutive hits from Alejandro and Morido allowed Bulldogs to pull to a 38-30 advantage at the half.
Red Warriors had a strong start in the third quarter to tie the score 42-all but Bulldogs leaned on back-to-back 3-point conversions by Yu to surge ahead 62-48 into the fourth.
Red Warriors made its last push in the final frame to come to within 9 points but Bulldogs unloaded a huge finishing run behind Yu, Alejandro and Aquino to build its largest lead 84-67.
“We are happy we won on opening day,” Jarin said. “I am also just blessed as a head coach sa mga players at programang napupuntahan ko. While we still lack the experience, hindi naman mafa-fast track iyon.”
Alvin Pasaol top-scored with 14 points while rookie Mark Maloles and Rey Acuno contributed 10 apiece for Red Warriors./PN
