MANILA – Meralco Bolts got back on the winning track in the PBA Governors’ Cup following a 96-90 victory over Star Hotshots yesterday at the Santa Rosa Multipurpose Complex in Laguna.
Import Allen Durham led the way with 29 points, 26 rebounds, seven assists, and three blocks for Bolts, which clinched a quarterfinals seat with its 6-2 win-loss record.
Chris Newsome added 17 while Clifford Hodge, Baser Amer and Garvo Lanete contributed 15, 13 and 11, respectively, for the reigning Governors’ Cup runner-up.
From a tight exchange early in the first quarter, Meralco pulled away on hits by Amer and Durham for an 18-10 lead. Three-pointers by Lanete increased Bolts’ lead further 32-15.
Star responded with a run early in the second quarter to cut the deficit 35-46 on triples by Paul Lee and Jio Jalalon, but Bolts managed to distance further with hits from Amer and Hodge for a 59-41 halftime lead.
Hotshots went on a huge run in the second half behind Jalalon and Mark Barroca to come to within 67-74 but Meralco quickly responded with hits from Amer and Tolomia to increase the lead 80-67.
Star had its last push in the final frame, coming to as close as 87-93 on conversions from import Malcolm Hill, but hits from Hodge, Newsome and Durham raised Bolts’ lead 96-87 with under a minute in the match.
Hill finished with double-double 28 points and 10 rebounds while Jalalon and Ian Sangalang had 15 and 11 points, respectively, for Hotshots, which suffered its third straight loss and slid to a 4-3 win-loss mark./PN
