MANILA – San Miguel Beermen squandered a 25-point advantage before hanging on to a 107-103 win over Barangay Ginebra Kings in the PBA Governors’ Cup Sunday night at the Smart-Araneta Coliseum.

Import Terrence Watson debuted with double-double 28 points and 17 rebounds for Beermen, which snapped Kings’ seven-game victory run and posted its second straight victory to improve to 5-3.

Arwind Santos added 23 markers while Chris Ross, Alex Cabagnot and June Mar Fajardo contributed 20, 16 and 10 points, respectively, for Beermen, which is making a case for a Grand Slam this season.

From a tight exchange early in the game, Beermen pulled away behind Watson and Fajardo for an 18-8 lead. Kings rallied to within 6 points but conversions from Santos and Ross increased Beermen’s lead back to 30-16.

Santos continued to heat up for Beermen in the second canto as back-to-back triples extended the lead 40-24. It grew to its largest 56-31 on triples by Ross.

Kings made its move in the third quarter, with Greg Slaughter and LA Tenorio connecting from the inside to trim the deficit to 20, but Beermen quickly increased it back to 25 with baskets from Santos and Marcio Lassiter.

Ginebra had its last push in the final quarter, coming to within 93-101 on hits by Joe Devance and Tenorio, but a basket by Cabagnot followed by free throws from Watson made it a 10-point game for Beermen.

“Before this game I was worried because we’re struggling in our game and Ginebra was playing really well,” said Beermen head coach Leo Austria. “I have to commend all the players, even those on the bench. They really showed what they had.”

Japeth Aguilar top-scored with 18 points while Tenorio and Slaughter had 17 and 16 points, respectively, for Kings, which slid to 7-2 and tied with NLEX Road Warriors./PN
