MANILA – The House of Representatives approved on third and final reading on Monday a bill seeking the postponement of the barangay and Sangguniang Kabataan elections this year.
A total of 212 representatives voted to pass House Bill No. 6308, which moves the elections from Oct. 23, 2017 to the second week of May 2018. Ten voted against the measure.
Under the bill, incumbent barangay officials will be in holdover positions until they are replaced by their successors after the May 2018 elections.
Subsequent elections shall be held on the second Monday of May 2020 and every three years thereafter, the bill stated.
The measure echoed President Rodrigo Duterte’s call to postpone the elections.
He feared drug money would be used to fuel the candidacies of people suspected to have connections with drug lords.
Last year, Congress approved a similar bill to postpone the 2016 barangay and SK elections to Oct. 23 this year.
The Senate has yet to approve the counterpart bill filed by Senate Majority Leader Vicente Sotto III, who wants the elections to be postponed for a year./PN
