ILOILO – Gov. Arthur Defensor Sr. confirmed meeting with the town mayors of the 2nd District on Wednesday night.
He gave a hint on what they discussed.
“Mas maayo pa siguro nga parte sa pulitika, parte sa pagsulod namon sa PDP-Laban kag pagsumpa. I will hold you in suspended animation and I will bring you good and exciting news next week,” Defensor told reporters yesterday.
The 2nd District is made up of the towns of Alimodian, Leganes, Leon, New Lucena, Pavia, San Miguel, Santa Barbara, and Zarraga.
The governor and son Cong. Arthur Defensor Jr. of the 3rd District will take oath as PDP-Laban members here. The date, however, is still being finalized.
They were invited to join the ruling party by House Speaker Pantaleon Alvarez on Aug. 13.
The congressman of the 2nd District, Arcadio Gorriceta of Pavia, is a political ally of the Defensors although he has opted to stay with the Liberal Party for now.
A member of the Liberal Party since 2013, Defensor confessed to being uneasy changing political parties.
“I am not used to shifting from one party to other. But I have been sent several emissaries asking me to transfer. And it made me thought, too, of the support, of the big-ticket programs that the national government could extend to Iloilo province and its municipalities,” said Defensor.
The governor also cited “practical politics” in deciding to join the party of President Rodrigo Duterte.
“I told PDP-Laban my son is interested to become governor. I made the message clear but up to that point lang,” said Defensor.
“If Toto wants to win an election, the administration party can greatly help him. That is practical politics. That is the reality of politics. We don’t have the money to buy votes,” explained the candid Defensor.
The governor, now in his third term, is barred by law from seeking a fourth consecutive term./PN
