BACOLOD City – Rep. Greg Gasataya consulted local stakeholders regarding the planned amendment of Republic Act 10054, or the Motorcycle Helmet Act of 2009, yesterday.

“All motorcycle riders, including drivers and back riders, shall at all times wear standard protective motorcycle helmets while driving, whether long or short drives, in any type of road and highway,” Section 3 of the act stated.

The House of Representatives is planning to grant local government units the discretion to whether or not make the use of helmet mandatory within their jurisdictions.

Gasataya said he wanted to know the sentiments of concerned parties in the city before presenting his report before the Congress.

Gasataya met with Superintendent Roderick Minong, the new officer-in-charge of the Bacolod City Police Office, Superintendent Luisito Acebuche, head of the Bacolod Traffic Authority Office, and motorcycle clubs in the city.

Acebuche was in favor of using helmets because it minimizes the number of casualties in traffic accidents.

Minong and the motorcycle club members agreed with Acebuche.

Moreover, Gasataya added that the motorcycle club members will also attend a hearing that Councilor Dindo Ramos, chairman of the Sangguniang Panlungsod (SP) committee on transportation, will conduct regarding the proposed ordinance against “riding-in-tandem” crimes in the city.

The hearing will be on Oct. 16, around 2 p.m. at the SP session hall at the Bacolod City Government Center./PN
