ILOILO – Philippine Army soldiers and the New People’s Army (NPA) clashed anew in Janiuay town.
The encounter lasted for some five minutes in Barangay Barasalon before dawn on Saturday, according to Senior Inspector John Paul Guay, Janiuay police chief.
Troops of the 3rd Infantry Division’s (3ID) 33rd Reconnaissance Company engaged some five armed rebels around 3 a.m.
Seeing they were outnumbered by soldiers, the rebels quickly withdrew, said Guay.
None from the 33rd Reconnaissance Company were hurt. It was unclear as of this writing if any of the rebels were hut or died.
This was the second encounter between government troops and insurgents in Janiuay this month. On Oct. 6, six Army soldiers were wounded in an ambush.
It was in retaliation to the combat operations of the 61st Infantry Battalion (IB) in the hinterlands of the municipality, according to Ka Julio Montana, spokesperson of the NPA-Panay (Coronacion Chiva “Waling-Waling” Command).
Cadres of the Jose Percival Estocada Command carried out the ambush, he said in a statement.
It was not immediately known which NPA group clashed with the Army on Saturday.
According to Montana, over three weeks of the 61st IB’s combat operations in the mountains of Janiuay were scaring farmers.
“Notoryus ang yunit ng kaaway na ito sa pananakot, pang-hostage at pamamaril sa mga sibilyan sa kanayunan na kanilang inooperasyon at pagkatapos ay pagbintangang mga NPA,” said Montana.
He linked the 61st IB to the death of two civilians in Tapaz, Capiz, one of whom was a five-year-old child, and the death of two farmers in Barangay Jebaca, Maayon, Capiz on February this year.
“Hanggang ngayon ay hindi pa nabibigyan ng hustisya ang mga biktima,” according to Montana without giving names./PN
