MANILA – Ateneo Blue Eagles survived numerous runs by University of Santo Tomas Tigers to score a 102-83 victory in the UAAP Season 80 men’s basketball yesterday at the Smart-Araneta Coliseum.

Ilonggo Ferdinand “Thirdy” Ravena III flirted with triple-double with 20 points, eight rebounds and seven assists while Matthew Nieto chipped in with 19 markers for Blue Eagles.

With the victory, Blue Eagles improved to a 12-0 win-loss record. It will move closer to an outright finals seat if its sweeps its remaining games against University of the Philippines Maroons and De La Salle University Green Archers.

Blue Eagles waxed hot early, courtesy of hits from Ravena, Chibueze Ikeh and Nieto, to build an 18-6 advantage. Tigers responded with its own run behind Christian Garcia to pull to within 20-26.

After Blue Eagles increased the lead 29-20, Tigers went on another rally to snatch the lead 35-33 on an inside hit by Jeepy Faundo. But Ravena and Nieto conspired as Blue Eagles built a 63-49 edge.

Tigers had its last push to come to within 70-75 late in the third. Ateneo went for a finishing blow in the fourth behind Nieto, Ravena and Manuel Tolentino for its largest lead 102-81 on back-to-back hits by Troy Mallilin.

With the defeat, Tigers slipped to 0-13. It is in danger of having a winless season if it loses its final assignment against University of the East Red Warriors on Nov. 12./PN
