MANILA – Malacañang condemned the spate of extrajudicial killings in the Philippines.
“We reiterate that this administration does not – and will never – condone extrajudicial and vigilante killings,” newly appointed Presidential Spokesman Harry Roque said yesterday in light of a Catholic Church-led prayer rally against drug-related killings at the EDSA Shrine.
The Philippine National Police’s Internal Affairs Service was investigating 2,243 drug-related killings in police operations as of September, said Roque.
Any violation of procedures in antidrug operations will be dealt with accordingly, he said.
“Accountability is essential to good governance,” stressed Roque.
The Duterte administration wanted to develop a “better rapport with the Catholic Church and seek the cooperation of its leaders,” he said.
“The President has repeatedly mentioned that he allows constructive dissent and that he would even give protesters the democratic space and time to enjoy the rights to peacefully assemble, seek redress and air their grievances,” said Roque.
He also urged the Catholic faithful to proactively help the government in the campaign against illegal drugs.
“We must come together as one country and one people and help the government in building a nation free from drugs, criminality and corruption,” Roque said.
Meanwhile, the Senate minority bloc – Franklin Drilon, Francis Pangilinan, Paolo Benigno Aquino IV, Risa Hontiveros, and Antonio Trillanes IV – expressed support to the 33-day “religious activities for nation-healing.”
“We hail this timely and significant effort of our prelates to go out and inspire action from Filipinos to speak out against injustice and violence through a peaceful gathering,” the opposition senators said./PN
