MANILA – Malacañang welcomed the plan of United States President Donald Trump to stay for another day in the Philippines to attend the 12th East Asia Summit.
The annual event is a conference of leaders in East Asia and adjoining countries.
Trump was originally scheduled to leave Manila and return to the US before the summit begins on Nov. 14.
“President (Rodrigo) Duterte looks forward to engaging President Trump in a productive dialogue at the ASEAN-US Commemorative Summit and the EAS,” Communications Secretary Martin Andanar said.
It could be the perfect time to resolve challenges facing the Association of Southeast Asian Nations and other partnering countries, said Andanar.
The Philippines, as chair of the 31st ASEAN Summit and Related Meetings, will let all foreign leaders and delegates experience the world-famous Filipino hospitality, he said.
“And since we are about to approach the culminating event of the 31st ASEAN, we will need to ensure the security of the ASEAN leaders, plus the partnering countries,” said Andanar.
“We should show our best foot forward because this is the time that we can show the whole world that we are a very good country, a very nice country, disciplined people, and we are very warm and very orderly,” he added.
Trump himself confirmed on Friday last week his extended stay in Asia.
“We’re actually staying an extra day in the Philippines,” he told White House reporters before leaving for his trip. “We have a big conference, the second conference, and I think we’re going to have great success.”
Meanwhile, Malacañang said this year’s Gala Dinner for ASEAN leaders will be held the night before the summit.
“Kumbaga fresh pa iyong mga leaders natin kasi kararating pa lang ng Pilipinas, and nakapaghanda na rin iyong mga senior ministers days prior to that. So iyon ang isang pagkakaiba ng ASEAN,” Andanar said./PN
