SAN JOSE, Antique – A group of consumers has volunteered to monitor if businesses are complying with fair trade laws in this capital town.

The group is composed of 25 members from various institutions and associations: Advance Central College, Senior Citizens of San Jose, San Jose Multi-Purpose Cooperative, and San Pedro National High School.

The group is tasked to monitor businesses at the San Jose Trade Town Center, according to Engineer Lynna Joy Cardinal, senior trade and industry development specialist of the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI).

One of their tasks is to make sure that the businesses are using properly calibrated weighing scales, Cardinal added.

Items like canned goods, milk, and noodles, among others, are also being checked to make sure that the businesses are following the suggested retail prices of manufactured products.

The result of the ongoing monitoring will be discussed with the officers of the San Jose Trade Town Vendors’ Association.

The discussion is expected to arrive at measures to promote fair trade practices in the market.

These measures must benefit both consumers and business establishments, Cardinal stressed.

The DTI is also checking the prices of in demand goods this holiday season – like ham, sauces and cheese, among others – to ensure that their suggested retail prices are followed. (With PIA/PN)
