ILOILO City – The Iloilo City Council for the Protection of Children has feted the “Most Outstanding Child-friendly Barangay” for 2017.
This city has 180 barangays.
Barangay Veterans Village, City Proper was declared “Champion Most Outstanding Child-friendly Barangay” and received a P20,000 prize and a plaque.
“We prepared for this competition. All of us cooperated and helped. The most important thing is to make children feel important. We need to show them our support through activities which train them to become better individuals,” said Barangay Captain John Eric David.
Barangay Veterans Village bagged the “Best in Survival” and “Best in Protection” awards; Barangay Airport, Mandurriao was cited for “Best in Development” and Barangay Balabago, Jaro was “Best in Participation.”
“This is the best time for us to assess and monitor how barangays fare with projects for children. We are so proud of these child-friendly barangays,” said Mayor Jose Espinosa III.
The runners-up were Barangay Airport (first), Barangay Balabago, Jaro (second), Barangay Dulonan, Arevalo (third), Barangay South Fundidor, Molo (fourth), and Barangay Don Esteban, Lapuz (fifth).
The annual search aims to sustain and improve the functions of the Barangay Council for Protection of Children (BCPC) in implementing child-friendly practices.
The winners passed the standards set by Department of the Interior Local Government.
Validators and evaluators from inter-monitoring taskforce and line agencies conducted site validation to each barangay for actual monitoring of documents and activities.
The criteria were:
* survival – 25 percent
* development – 25 percent
* protection – 25 percent
* participation – 25 percent (Iloilo City PIO/PN)
