ILOILO City – Western Visayas recorded more than one million foreign tourist arrivals in 2017, according to the Department of Tourism (DOT).
Data from DOT’s partial report on visitor arrivals for 2017 showed a total of 1,005,280 foreign tourists visited the region as of Dec. 15, 2017.
The province of Aklan registered the most number of foreign tourists at 898,914 followed by Bacolod City with 69,337.
Iloilo City recorded 21,278 foreign visitors; Negros Occidental, 4,681; Antique, 4,072; Guimaras, 2,968; Iloilo province, 2,162; and Capiz, 1,868.
Visitors from East Asia remained the top foreign tourists in Region 6 with over 754,052 recorded arrivals. Of these, Chinese nationals registered the most number at 349,011.
China was followed by South Korea with 342,525 arrivals; Taiwan, 40,253; United States of America, 35,710; and Malaysia with 20,270 arrivals.
This year, DOT hopes to increase the tourist arrivals to 5.7 million. This is higher by 3.5 percent from the 5.5 million target for 2017. (PIA-Iloilo/PN)
