CEBU City – Two residents of Malabuyoc town in Cebu province died in a landslide triggered by tropical depression “Agaton” that made landfall in the nearby Santander town at around 5 a.m. on Tuesday.

The Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (PDRRMO) identified the casualties as Richie Pimentel, 39, and Flora Basadre Mata, 64.

Mata was inside her house in Barangay Looc when it was buried in mud, said PDRRMO spokesperson Julius Regner.

She was among those told to evacuate amid the downpour brought by “Agaton” but refused to heed the local disaster management office.

Pimentel, meanwhile, panicked when he heard shouts from the neighborhood and jumped off the window of his house.

He landed on a concrete pavement head first and was sent to a nearby hospital where he was pronounced “dead on arrival.”

Pimentel may have been unaware of the concrete pavement because of the power outage in the area since 3 a.m., Regner said.

Threats of landslide in Toledo City and Barili and Boljoon towns also prompted the evacuation of 119 families, or 595 individuals, the PDRRMO reported.

Twelve barangays in Mandaue and Toledo cities and Moalboal, Dumanjug and Boljoon towns were flooded. Aside from Malabuyoc, landslides were likewise reported in Ginatilan and Toledo City.

The PDRRMO declared a red alert status in the entire province to get close monitoring and situation updates from all local government units. A red alert status meant all personnel were on standby for deployment.

Teams were also deployed in Toledo City to assist the local government in the evacuation due to flooding and landslide.

Another team was sent to southern Cebu to verify damages and the needs of evacuees. (PNA)
