ILOILO City – The police in this city and Iloilo province recorded no case of stray bullet-related injuries or deaths during the holidays, including the New Year celebration.

“As of this time, we have not received any report on stray bullets, but we have two firecracker-related incidents,” said Chief Inspector Ruel Firmo of the Iloilo City Police Office’s Investigation and Detection Management Section.

In early December 2017, the Police Regional Office 6 (PRO-6) expressed hope there won’t be deaths and injuries due to stray bullets during the holidays.

There should be no cases, too, of indiscriminate or illegal discharge of firearms, said Superintendent Gilbert Gorero, PRO-6 spokesperson.

The Philippine National Police observed a “one-strike” policy during the holidays. Provincial and city police directors, chiefs of police and other commanders would be relieved from their posts if they failed to curb or solve cases of deaths and injuries caused by stray bullets within 24 hours.

As to the number of firecracker-related injuries, Firmo said, “We have the same numbers as last year’s.”

The injured, two minors, were residents of the City Proper, he said.

During the 2017 New Year celebration, Firmo recalled two stray bullet-related injuries and two firecracker-related injuries.

In Iloilo province, firecracker-related incidents dropped to 10 (Dec. 16, 2017 to Jan. 2, 2018) from 55 (December 2016 to January 2017).

According to Iloilo Police Provincial Office director Senior Superintendent Marlon Tayaba, four of the 10 cases happened on Jan. 2 in the component city of Passi City, Lambunao and Dueñas towns.

“We tried our best informing the public about the hazards of firecrackers but some people were really hard-headed,” said Tayaba./PN
