BACOLOD City – Mount Kanlaon was acting up again.
Monitors have recorded on Wednesday 197 volcanic earthquakes at the active volcano over the past 24 hours.
Fourteen episodes of tremors lasting from 1.5 to 31 minutes each have occurred in the area, too, according to the latest bulletin from the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs).
Moreover, there was “degassing” – the process by which magma loses its volatiles to the atmosphere – at Kanlaon’s active vent but thick clouds prevented it from being visible, the Phivolcs bulletin stated.
Phivolcs has also recorded sulfur dioxide emissions of 640 metric tons a day on average as of Wednesday.
Alert Level No. 2 continued to be hoisted over the active volcano.
Entry to the 4-kilometer permanent danger zone was still prohibited.
Mount Kanlaon has not registered any volcanic activity on Jan. 1 and 2.
In case of an eruption, areas that will most likely be immediately affected were Canlaon City in Negros Oriental, and La Carlota and Bago cities and La Castellana and Moises Padilla towns in Negros Occidental, authorities said./PN
