CEBU City – The blaze at the Ayala Metro Mall’s department store in Cebu City was declared under control yesterday afternoon.

Senior Fire Officer 2 Christopher Orbiso of the Cebu City fire bureau said the fire was put under control around 12:45 p.m.

Orbiso added that the shoe section of the mall’s department store on the second floor was the only portion that was left on fire.

Declaring the fire “under control” means that the blaze will no longer spread to other areas, Orbiso said.

The efforts to totally put out the fire was ongoing, he stressed.

Orbiso, however, said the firefighters will no longer try to enter the building. Its structure has become “very weak.”

He added that the upper floors might collapse.

Several holes have been created on the establishment where firemen were planning to place their water cannons to put out the fire – this instead of firefighters entering the building, according to Orbiso.

The mall’s department store was still covered with thick smoke as of 2:30 p.m. yesterday.

Fire broke out at the mall’s department store around 9:30 p.m. on Friday.

Authorities had said it may take two days to totally put out the fire.

No one has been reported hurt by the fire. (With report from GMA News/PN)
