MANILA – Justin Brownlee found his shooting touch in the overtime to lift Tanduay Alab Pilipinas to an 89-80 win over Singapore Slingers in the ASEAN Basketball League at the OCBC Arena in Singapore.
With the scores tied at 78-all, Alab quickly surged in the extension period on Sunday with back-to-back hits from Brownlee, who then dished off a pass to fellow import Renaldo Balkman to extend the advantage to 6.
Bobby Ray Parks Jr. put the icing on the cake for Alab with a completed 3-point play before Slingers’ Filipino-American import Alfred Mandani ended the match with a layup.
Brownlee finished with 17 points, 8 assists and 7 rebounds but struggled offensively with a 5-of-18 shooting clip for Alab to stretch its winning streak to three after losing its first three outings.
Balkman top-scored with 26 points and 8 rebounds, while Parks contributed 11 points and 7 boards for Alab, which avenged its defeat to Slingers in their first encounter last month in Santa Rosa, Laguna.
“It’s great to have (Brownlee and Balkman) on our side, that’s for sure. They’re world-class imports,” said Alab head coach Jimmy Alapag. “I think they give us a chance to contend. But we have to keep on building to have a chance come April.”
Alab seemed headed for a victory after leading by six 73-67 midway in the fourth on consecutive points from John Raymundo and Domingo. Slingers countered with a huge run and forced an extension on a late triple by Mandani.
Chris Charles, who previously played for Blackwater Elite in the PBA, finished with 22 points and 11 rebounds, while Mandani had 13 markers for Slingers, which slipped to a 3-5 win-loss slate./PN
