ILOILO City – Firecracker-related injuries in Western Visayas dropped 53 percent, data from the Police Regional Office 6 (PRO-6) showed.
From 198 cases, the number decreased to only 95 this past holiday season.
PRO-6 spokesman Superintendent Gilbert Gorero said the figures were based on the Department of Health’s (DOH) final count on Jan. 5.
The count covered the period Dec. 21, 2017 to Jan. 5, 2018.
There were 43 cases in Negros Occidental, 14 in Aklan, 12 in Iloilo province, eight each in Capiz and Antique, six in Guimaras, and four in Iloilo City, the figures showed.
Gorero attributed the downward trend in the number of firecracker-related injuries in the region to the multi-sectoral cooperation and coordination between the DOH, Department of Interior and Local Government and Bureau of Fire Protection.
He added that President Rodrigo Duterte’s Executive Order 28, which regulates and controls the use of firecracker and other pyrotechnic devices in the country, effectively aided the reduction of firecracker-related injuries during the holiday season.
Only one case of indiscriminate firing/stray bullet was recorded in the previous holiday season. It was in Buruanga, Aklan.
PRO-6 earlier reported that there was a 67.75-percent decrease in the number of crime incidents during the previous holiday season, from 2016’s 1,977 cases to 2017’s 841 cases. (PNA/PN)
