KALIBO, Aklan – The 2018 Ati-Atihan Festival in this capital town will pay tribute to Mindanao and its people, the festival organizer said.

Kalibo Santo Niño Ati-Atihan Foundation, Inc. chairman Albert Menez said flags with colors representing Mindanao were already installed all over the major streets in the town.

Ati-Atihan Festival, one of the most sought after festivals in Western Visayas, will be from Jan. 15 to 21.

“I have been receiving comments from those who already saw the flags. They said they felt they were in Mindanao,” Menez said.

A gun ban will be imposed during the festival, local police said.

The gun ban is one of the measures to make sure that revelers are safe during the entire celebration.

Local authorities are expecting a heavy influx of revelers this year.

Senior Police Officer 4 Renee Armenio of the Site Task Group Ati – which is assigned to secure the entire Ati-Atihan revelry – said they are aiming for zero gun-related incidents during the festival.

Permits to carry firearms outside residence will be suspended during the festival.Only members of Armed Forces of the Philippines and Philippine National Police performing official duties and wearing their prescribed uniforms are exempted from the ban, Armenio stressed.

Revelers are also advised that bringing of backpacks, deadly weapons, and bottled non-alcoholic and alcoholic drinks are not allowed in festival zones.

Smoking is also banned during the festival. (With report from PNA/PN)
