KALIBO, Aklan – The “Uray Hilway” of Nabas, Aklan was declared champion in the Aklan Higante Contest, one of the side events of the annual Ati-Atihan Festival.
The higante entries paraded the streets of this capital town on Jan. 18.
“Uray Hilway” bested seven other entries in the contest, taking home the P45,000 grand prize.
“Ibajaynon Coconut Farmer” of Ibajay, Aklan, on the other hand, received P40,000 for placing second.
“Enteng Mamumunit” of Tangalan, Aklan landed in third place while the “Maniwangtiwang Ati Ga-kigi it Abaka” of Madalag, Aklan, in fourth place. They received P35,000 and P30,000 cash prizes, respectively.
In fifth place is the “Maria Sag-uton Malinawnon nga Ati” of Malinao, Aklan with a cash prize worth P25,000.
Consolation prize winners – “Ati Magdadaet” of Banga, Aklan; “Manughaboe nga Ati it Kalibo” of Kalibo, Aklan; and “Felimon Mananagat” of New Washington, Aklan – received P15,000 each.
Contest hall of famers “Manughaboe,” “Chef Ati” and “Matugahong Ati” of Balete, Aklan also marched the streets during the contest.
The theme for this year’s Aklan Higante Contest is “Pangabuhian it kada Banwa.”
The contest aims to showcase the culture, livelihood and industry in the different municipalities of the province.
The higante entries were judged based on audience impact and appeal, relevance to the theme and, artistry and creativity. (Aklan Forum Journal/PN)
