Alert level at restive Mayon volcano raised to 4

MANILA – Authorities raised the alert level at the restive Mayon volcano in Albay province to 4 – which means a hazardous eruption is imminent – on Monday afternoon.

The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Philvolcs) increased the alert level after an ash cloud towered over the 2,460-meter volcano at 12:45 p.m.

Ashfall was observed in parts of the province’s 2nd and 3rd districts, as well as in Legazpi City, Phivolcs chief Renato Solidum told a news conference.

Iyong pagsabog (on Monday) ay hindi purely magmatic kundi phreatomagmatic dahil may puting usok at may halong tubig,” Solidum said. “Kapag masyadong matindi ang pag-ulan, puwedeng magka-landslide.”

An alert level 4 indicates that a “hazardous eruption [is] imminent,” a Phivolcs table of alert levels at Mayon volcano showed.

It is characterized by “intense unrest,” with persistent tremor, many low frequency-type earthquakes; sulfur dioxide emission level showing sustained increase or abrupt decrease; intense crater glow; and incandescent lava dome, lava fountain and lava flow in the summit.

At this level a “hazardous eruption is possible within days,” and Phivolcs would recommend the extension of the danger zone to 8 kilometers or more “in the sector where the crater rim is low.”

Albay governor Al Francis Bichara advised residents to wear face masks and stay indoors, especially with “zero visibility” in parts of Guinobatan, Ligao and Camalig towns after the major ash eruption.

Bichara also suspended classes in all public and private schools across the province, he told CNN Philippines./PN
