FORMER world boxing champion Sonny Boy Jaro makes his ring return when he faces fellow Filipino fighter Donny Mabao on Feb. 17 at the Gaisano City Mall in Bacolod City.

This will be the first fight of the Silay City, Negros Occidental-native fighter following his shocking loss to IBF Inter-Continental super flyweight champion Jonas Sultan last May 2017.

Jaro, a former World Boxing Council (WBC) flyweight champion, said he is making a last push to his career to get another shot at world title before finally hanging his gloves.

“Gusto ko na ring magpahinga sa boxing pero hindi pa puwede,” Jaro said in an interview. “Susubok muna ako uli baka sakaling makalaban ako uli sa world championship.”

“Konting taon na rin lang ako sa boxing. Kung magkakaroon ako ng sariling bahay, titigil na ako sa boksing,” added Jaro. “Dapat sana pwede na akong mag-retire kaso hindi natin naingatan ang kinita natin dati kaya kailangan pang magboksing uli.”

The 35-year-old Jaro will be entering the match with a 43-14-5 win-loss-draw ring record, including 30 stoppage wins, while Mabao has 22-34-3 slate, with four stoppage wins.

The Jaro-Mabao match will be the co-main event of Bacolod City-native Merlito Sabillo’s match against Oriental and Pacific Boxing Federation (OPBF) light flyweight champion Edward Heno.

The upcoming event is presented by Highland International Boxing Promotions and supported by the Singwancha Foundation and sanctioned by the Games and Amusements Board.

After securing the commitment of setter Marianne Sotomil, the University of the Philippines Lady Maroons is still trying to recruit more volleyball players from Bacolod Tay Tung High School Thunderbolts.

Tay Tung vice president for sports Jose Montalbo told Panay News that newly-appointed Lady Maroons head coach Godfrey Okumu is also interested on Shane Carmona and Alyssa Bertolano.

“(Lady Maroons coaching staff) were able to see firsthand how our players perform so, aside from Marianne, their attention was also caught by Shane and Alyssa,” Montalbo said.

“Actually, si Alyssa may iba ring Manila-based schools ang nag-i-inquire kung available but they are still not graduating. We are only willing to give them after high school,” he added.

Also under the Lady Maroons’ radar are Thunderbolts’ beach volleyball players’ Nohlin Jundana, Marixi Maligmat and Joan Doguna, who recently won the NOPSSCEA beach volleyball tilt.

“Yung tatlong beach volleyball players namin ay pwede na dahil they are graduating this year, but we just want to see their offers muna before deciding if they will also go there,” Montalbo said./PN
