MANILA – Justin Brownlee scored four straight points in the endgame as Alab Pilipinas stunned Hong Kong’s Chong Son Kung Fu 94-91 in the 2017-2018 ASEAN Basketball League at the Sta. Rosa Multi-Complex in Sta. Rosa, Laguna.
Down 90-91 on a free throw by Kung Fu’s Justin Howard on Wednesday night, Brownlee also scored two from the charity stripe to surge Alab ahead 92-91 before sealing the win with a layup from a pass by fellow import Renaldo Balkman with three seconds left.
Brownlee, who struggled with his shots in the first three quarters, finished with double-double 20 points and 11 rebounds for Alab, which tallied its fourth straight win to improve to 7-4 card.
Bobby Ray Parks Jr. led the way with season-high 31 points, while Balkman had another double-double performance of 20 points and 16 rebounds for the Philippine-based team.
Trailing by as much as 11 points in the first half, Alab had a strong start in the third behind Parks to come to within 50-53. Kung Fu quickly created distance at 61-53 with hits from Howard but consecutive points from Brownlee pulled Alab to within 62-65.
Kung Fu went up again by eight points early in the fourth but three straight triples from Joshua Urbiztondo gave Alab the lead at 82-80 with under a minute left. Kung Fu, however, got a last minute basket from Howard to force an overtime.
In the extension period, Balkman scored five straight points to give Alab a slim 89-88 lead. After a basket from Kung Fu’s Michael McKinney, Alab was able to tie the score at 90-all on a split free throw by Parks.
Howard and McKinney finished with 25 points apiece, while Anthony Tucker had 24 points and nine rebounds for Kung Fu, which slid down to second place with 6-2 win-loss card./PN
