MANILA â National University Lady Bulldogs stamped class in the UAAP Season 80 womenâs volleyball yesterday as it beat Adamson University Lady Falcons 25-15, 25-23, 16-25, 25-13 at the SM Mall of Asia Arena in Pasay City.
Jaja Santiago led with 16 points â 11 attacks, four blocks and a service ace â as Lady Bulldogs hopes to bounce back after failing to reach the semifinals last year.
âNgayong last playing year ko hindi ako papayag na hindi namin makukuha iyon (championship),â Santiago said.
De La Salle University Lady Spikers, on the other hand, survived an opening-day scare as it edged University of Santo Tomas 25-20, 17-25, 25-22, 15-25, 15-8.
Tin Tiamzonâs kill pushed La Salle to a match point and an Aduke Ogunsanya block on Sisi Rondina sealed the win for the Lady Spikers.
NU charged with consecutive points from Santiago and Aiko Urdas for a 16-11 lead. The lead grew further to 22-14 following errors from Lady Falcons and hits from Santiago.
Lady Bulldogs had an early advantage in the second but Lady Falcons responded and took a 22-18 edge. NU then leaned on 3 straight points from Risa Sato before completing the run with hits from Santiago.
Lady Bulldogs bounced back in the fourth frame for a quick 11-3 start on 4 straight points from Urdas. After Lady Falcons cut it to 5, Lady Bulldogs pulled away anew behind Sato and Santiago to end the match.
Rookie Chiarra Permentilla led the way with 12 points â nine attacks and three service aces â while Mary Joy Dacoron chipped in with 11 markers for Lady Falcons.
In the other match, reigning MVP Majoy Baron led the Lady Spikers with 19 points from 12 kills, five blocks and two service aces. Des Cheng added 12 and Aduke Ogunsanya scored 10.
Rondina finished with 28 points while Filipina-Italian rookie Milena Alessandrini debuted with 18 points. (With SPIN.ph/PN)
