BACOLOD City – The Bagong Alyansang Makabayan in Negros Island (Bayan-Negros) belittled the P150 wage hike proposal that the Trade Union Congress of the Philippines (TUCP) submitted before the Regional Tripartite Wages and Productivity Board (RTWPB) in Western Visayas.

Instead, Bayan-Negros said there must be an immediate implementation of the nationwide P750 daily minimum wage.

Christian Tuayon, chairman of Bayan-Negros, said the regionalization of wages through the RTWPB has been “inutile” in imposing “real living wages” for workers across the country.

Tuayon added that employers have been using the regionalization of wages to undermine the value of hard work of the labor force.

According to Tuayon, the TUCP will be “lucky” if it can push for a P10 wage hike through the RTWPB.

However, this won’t be enough to cushion the ill effects of the Tax Reform for Acceleration and Inclusion law, which raised the taxes on basic products and services in the country, he added.

Tuayon stressed that the disparity in the rate of regional minimum wages has been a “perennial problem” of Filipino minimum wage earners.

For example, the minimum wage in Region 7 is higher than in Region 6 though the prices of basic commodities are the same, he added.

Tuayon believes that it is better to abolish regional wage boards.

Meanwhile, National Federation of Sugarcane Workers-Negros chairman Roque Rillo called out the RTWPB Region 6 for having the employer sector outnumber the labor sector in one of its scheduled hearings./PN
