Jail ‘contrabands’ crushed

ILOILO City – Fifty-two cellular phones and chargers, knives and other contrabands seized from various detention cells of the Bureau of Jail Management and Penology (BJMP) Region 6 were destroyed yesterday.

Senior Superintendent Rex Delarmente, regional director, spearheaded the destruction at the BJMP compound here.

He said the items were seized from July to August this year.

“Cellular phones, deadly weapons, much more illegal drugs are not allowed inside detention cells. Those inmates who violated this policy would suffer penalties,” said Delarmente.

Jailers and wardens will also be held liable, he added.

Forfeiture of the “visiting privileges” is among the penalties imposed on inmates.

On the other hand, remiss wardens and jailers may be sacked.

“But we have to conduct an investigation first,” said Delarmente.

A vibratory road roller from the Department of Public Works and Highways was used to crush the contrabands.

Aside from the media, representatives from the Department of Interior and Local Government, Civil Service Commission and the National Meat Inspection Commission witnessed the destruction./PN
