ILOILO City – A mix of tourists and local government employees were caught smoking in public places during the Dinagyang Festival, according to the Iloilo City Anti-Smoking Task Force (ICAST).
ICAST chairman Iñigo Garingalao said they have apprehended some 230 individuals during the highlight weekend and a week prior.
“May isa ka foreigner (American citizen) nga ndakpan, ang gintambayan niya gin-ticket-an man,” Garingalao noted.
While he described their operation during the biggest local tourism event of the year as “satisfactory,” Garingalao acknowledged that the ICAST could have done better, especially at night.
He said they would look to tying up with the local police and establishing a better tandem between ICAST personnel and enforcement volunteers.
Regulation Ordinance 2013-348 prohibits smoking in several areas in the city, including public buildings, public conveyances, entertainment establishments, and around fire hazards, among others.
Violators face up to P5,000 in fines, up to 60 hours of community work and/or up to 10 days of imprisonment./PN
