ILOILO City – The Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) in Panay and Negros islands are on alert following the arrest of a suspected finance officer of the New People’s Army (NPA) in Butuan City on Feb. 2.

“We expect local rebels to avenge the arrest of one of their leaders,” said Brigadier General Pio Diñoso of the Philippine Army’s 301st Brigade.

Leonida Guao was arrested Friday last week in Barangay Bading, Butuan City, Agusan del Norte. She had an arrest warrant for murder issued by the Regional Trial Court, Branch 7, in Bayugan City in adjacent Agusan del Sur.

“We are ready to engage (the rebels) all the time,” said Diñoso.

He urged people to help government troops by giving information on the whereabouts of the rebels.

“People are fed up with the rebels’ extortion activities and atrocities,” said Diñoso.

He also urged rebels to surrender.

“Government troops are closing in on them. They can run but they can’t hide from us. We and the stakeholders will soon catch them,” said Diñoso.

Last week, three former rebels from Lambunao, Iloilo each received livelihood assistance worth P65,000 through the government’s Comprehensive Local Integration Program (CLIP).

The assistance in the form of checks were released to the beneficiaries during the recent quarterly meeting of the Provincial Peace and Order Council at the Iloilo provincial capitol.

Prior to the release of the monetary assistance, the former rebels participated in capability-building and values formation activities conducted by the Social Welfare and Development Office of Lambunao. (PIA-Iloilo/PN)
