BACOLOD City – Negros Occidental governor Alfredo Marañon Jr. is pushing for the full mechanization of rice production in the province.

Yesterday, Marañon led the ceremonial field demonstration of using modern machineries for rice production in Barangay Tabunan, Bago City, Negros Occidental.

The process of planting and harvesting rice using the machineries were demonstrated.

Office of the Provincial Agriculturist personnel headed by Atty. Japhet Masculino, Bago City mayor Nicolas Yulo and several rice farmers associations witnessed the demonstration.

Among the machines used were the hand tracker levy maker, rice transplanter and rice combined harvester.

Marañon stressed that using the machines would entail little human intervention and would make rice production faster and more efficient.

An organized cooperative of rice farmers in Bago City will be using the machineries.

Bago City is the top producer of rice in Negros Occidental.

Marañon said he is planning to mechanize rice production in other towns and cities in the province as part of achieving his promise to make Negros Occidental rice-sufficient.

An open forum among various rice farmers associations regarding financial concerns followed the demonstration.

The forum is aimed at preventing the disintegration of the associations.

Marañon earlier said rice production in Negros Occidental is one the rise.

But he also said that the province is still importing rice from the nearby Iloilo province.

Marañon encouraged farmers to engage in organic rice farming because it yield has a huge demand and is more profitable./PN
