BACOLOD City – Local government and nongovernment organizations are preparing for the ill effects that tropical storm “Basyang” may bring to the city.
The City Disaster Risk and Reduction Management Council conducted a meeting yesterday to form action strategies in case any storm-triggered emergency – like flooding – occurs.
Several rescue groups attended the meeting. They include the Bacolod City Police Office, the Department of Social Services and Development, and the Bureau of Fire Protection.
Negros Occidental was place under Tropical Cyclone Warning No. 1 on Monday evening.
Mayor EvelioLeonardia – who was on official travel in Cebu City at that time – issued an order suspending classes of public schools (preschool to high school levels) in the city.
Several private schools in the city also suspended their classes.
Executive Assistant Joemarie Vargas, cluster head of the City Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office, said the classes will resume based on the updates from the Philippine Atmospheric Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration.
Roll-on, roll-off ships and other sea vessels plying the Bacolod-Iloilo route and vice versa were cancelled yesterday as advised by the Philippine Coast Guard.
Since rain started pouring in the city on Monday, there were no reported incidents of flooding, according to Vargas.
Moreover, Councilor Ricardo Tan – a member of the Chinese Chamber Volunteer Fire Brigade – launched “Project Dragon” amid the onslaught of typhoon “Basyang.”
Tan said the private sector is needed in times of disasters, especially when government resources fall short.
“People helping people is my concept for Project Dragon,” Tan added.
Tan said anyone interested to volunteer may coordinate with his office at the Bacolod City Government Center.
