ILOILO City – A P1.50 increase in jeepney fare is more reasonable than the P3.50 hike that transport groups are pressing, according to Councilor R Leone Gerochi, chairperson of the Sangguniang Panlungsod’s committee on transportation, energy and public utilities.

On Tuesday, he introduced a resolution expressing support to a similar opinion of the National Economic and Development Authority (NEDA) Region 6.

According to Gerochi, the interest of jeepney drivers and operators must be balanced with that of the commuting public.

Determining the rate of increase required analysis of relevant data and Gerochi believed NEDA did this.

In a Feb. 5 public hearing at the Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board regional office in Jaro district, transport groups pressed for a P5.50 increase in the minimum jeepney fare. NEDA, however, said this was too high.

The transport groups eventually lowered their fare hike demand to P3.50.

If the transport groups’ proposal is approved, the minimum fare would rise to P10 from the current P6.50.

NEDA, citing its data analysis, said a P1.50 fare increase was more sound.

Transport groups seeking a fare hike included the Iloilo City Loop Alliance of Jeepney Operators and Drivers Association, Iloilo City Alliance of Drivers Association and Confederation of Iloilo Provincial Jeepney Owners and Drivers Association.

Gerochi’s resolution was referred to the committee on transportation./PN
