MANILA – A native of Bacolod City made history after finishing the men’s division of the 4th Manila-Baguio 250-Kilometer Ultramarathon from Feb. 8 to 10.

Rolando Espina Jr.was not only the first Filipino to finish the grueling race participated by around 20 runners – he also set a new record of 35 hours and 43 minutes.

“It was a tough competition,” Espina told CNN Sportsdesk. “I did not have the time the get acclimatize since noong dumating akokinabukasan is start nang race.”

“Midway in the race, I nearly quit dahil nawala ako doon sa parang guide ko sa race,” added the runner, who works as a full-time nurse in Ireland. “We cannot sleep also kasi baka maunahan, but I instead took powernaps and sat down as my rest.”

The 43-year-old started joining marathons eight years ago. He said he is glad with his record feat and hopes to continue running while representing the Philippines.

“Of course, I will always represent Philippines over Ireland,” Espina said. “I feel proud and honored to represent the country. My goal is to have the Philippine flag raised at the finish line of any race I join in.”

Espina will be staying for the meantime in the Philippines as he will also participate in Zark’s Burgers Ultimate Run 500 (Ilocos to Quezon City) on Feb. 20./PN
